Nakhchivan in the trip to Azerbaijan
Disposed on the mounts chain of Zangezur, near the same named river, Nakhchivan is amidst the oldest cities in the East, has repeatedly undergone throughout its long history, destruction and renewed again several times. In 1924 it turned to the capital of the Autonomous Republic.
In the 12-13th centuries, Nakhchivan was the core of Ildegizidi, where many famous academics, poets and architects lived and created their great works. It developed a new architectural movement there, that later art historians began to define as an architectural school of Nakhichevan and deferred its imprint on the evolution of the architecture of Azerbaijan. The brightest representative was the renowned architect Ajami ibn Abu Bakr. Unfortunately, only two of his creations have survived, the mausoleum of Yusuf ibn Kuseir, created in 1162 and the Mausoleum of Momina Khatun.
Nakhchivan is also home of the University, which is an affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences. There built a modern Olympic sports complex, responding to the international standards.
Region generously endowed with mineral springs, which facilitates to the development of tourism. 18 km away of the city at an elevation of 1,100 meters is the source of the famous mineral water Sirab and there is also a factory for bottling it. And on the southern slope of Mount Duzdag, found the original deposit of rock salt and in the same place functioning the physiotherapy hospital. It was a center for trade since ancient times and is considered by many historians as the settlement existed here in the sixteenth century BC. Accordingly of legend, the town was founded by Noah, hence the interpretation of its name – a place of the first run – in Armenian. The first evidence of such decryption of names was made to Armenian historian Movses Khorenatsi, in the fifth century.
The main feature of the town is the Mausoleum of Momina Khatun created in the twelfth century, also known as the Atabek Gumbezi. Momina Khatun was the wife of Atabeg Jahan Pakhlevan, the head of the emirate Atabek Eldegiz. Monument from ten directions adorned with intricate patterns, painted brick walls and turquoise.
In the city, along with the historical museum, you can also visit other museums, including the Archaeological, placed on Istiklal or Independence street.
Today, in Nakhchivan inhabited more than 60,000 people. Here, the most developed industries are such as glass processing, furniture manufacturing, textiles and carpets. Large investments are being made in the progress of tourism.
Air transport is served by the existing here airport, and it is well organized with rail and road links. Several buses a day go in the direction of Igdir and Erzurum in the eastern Turkey.
