Aran province of Azerbaijan, in the tour of Caucasus
In ancient times, with the denomination of Arran or also the Aran, referred to mean the territory lying within a triangle formed by the confluence of the Kura and Araks, that was roughly in line with the area of modern Azerbaijan.
Today, the name of Aran, used in Azerbaijan to relate to areas consisting of Mugan plain, including the provinces as a Beylaqan, Imishli, Saatli, Sabirabad and several cities.
Aran economic region has a very favorable economic and geographical location, with a total area of 21 thousand square kilometers, covering 24% of the country’s territory. The predominant part of the province consists of plains. Only in some places there are small hills. The climate is dry and subtropical.
The region’s population is about 20% of the total populace of the nation. In the old days the denizens of Arran was a large variety of Greeks, Romans, Armenians and others who inhabited the land betwixt the rivers Kura and Arax.
In the pre-Islamic period, the inhabitants of Arran, were predominantly Christian, but during the Arab rule from the 7th to the 9th century, some of them converted to Islam, which classifies and the territory of Ganja and, mainly, the people spoke Persian. Then, during the Turkish rule the people became Turkic, and much later they were called Azeris.
Part of the population of Arran, remained Christians have been displaced as a result partly to Armenia and Georgia.
To date, the region is crossed by important railways and highways of the country, transport links connecting Baku with other states. A recent increase in international transportation has significantly increased the importance of these roads.
The region, as already noted, is one of the oldest, richest and most beautiful zone of Azerbaijan.
There are cultivated grain, cotton, watermelon – the most popular in Sabirabad, melon – in Kurdamir, quince – in Agdash, sugar beet – in Imishli, rice and other vegetables.

Since old times, there existed a variety of professional activities like knitting, silk production, carpet weaving, production of ceramics, wood and metal carving. Besides colorful knitted fabrics and carpets manufactured here are widely popular in many world markets, and colorful ceramic products and decorative items made of different metals are produced here in Barda, Yevlakh and Tartar.
The region is also renowned for its superb cuisine, where there are lush and varied dishes mostly with the use of meat of chickens and cattle. But the fish dishes are also widespread due to the proximity of the rivers. Basically they prepare the fish soups and cutlets.
